One of the most popular gifts for a mother, sister, girlfriend or wife is a diamond pendant. It makes a great present for any occasion, especially Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or Christmas. It can even be used as a gift just to let her know you are thinking about her.

To pick the perfect pendant, you need to consider the:

* Your budget
* Pendant’s shape
* Length of necklace
* Diamond’s cut
* Precious metal choices

Your Budget

Let’s face it; the price of the pendant is going to be one of the main determining factors in buying one, especially if it is a diamond pendant. Most people do not have unlimited budgets, but you don’t need to spend a great deal of money to buy a beautiful pendant. Your shopping trip will go much more smoothly if you determine what you can afford to spend before you go shopping for the gift.

Pendant’s Shape

Some of the most popular shapes for pendants are crosses, hearts and keys, but there are literally hundreds of more shapes from which to choose. You will want to consider what type of things the recipient likes and their personality when you pick out a pendant.

If she loves cats, you can find a pretty cat face or cat pendant to buy her. If you want to make a more romantic gesture, buy her a key pendant to represent the key to your heart or you can buy her a heart shaped pendant to represent your love for her.

Length of Necklace

When you buy a pendant, you need to consider the length of necklace with which it is going to be worn. A pendant should rest just above the collarbone, which is approximately an 18 inch chain for most women. Necklaces usually come in lengths of 16 to 20 inches and they will sit between the base of the throat and at the collarbone.

Ideally, the neck should be measured and you would add two to four inches to that measurement. Instead, if it is a gift, you may wish to measure one of her current necklaces and use that as your guide.

Diamond’s Cut

If you are buying a diamond solitaire pendant, the cut of the diamond needs is a consideration too. Some of the most popular cuts for diamond pendants are round and princess cuts, but the pear shape is also very popular. You may have heard a pear shape diamond referred to a teardrop shape, especially when worn as a pendant.

Precious Metal Choices

Yellow and white gold are the most common choices for the pendant’s setting and necklace, but with such high gold prices, you want to consider silver, stainless steel or titanium instead.

Pendant necklaces are timeless classic and these considerations will help you pick the perfect one.
