If you’re a novice quilter and you’re avid about all things quilting, then you’ll want to make sure you have a range of materials you can use. Here’s what you need to know before you pay a visit to Canada’s fabric stores online like Runaway Quilting.

Know what project

There are slews of fabric available out there. Before you shop, know what your project is. This will help you understand which types of fabrics fit the bill. This will make it easier for you to navigate the store with greater ease.

Understand the types

Once you know the project, you’ll need to decide which fabric options are a good match for the project. Start with common ones like cotton and work your way to other types like plushy fleece which you can use for blankets, Crazy Little Projects says. They’ll be more expensive, though, so make sure you consider your budget. There’s also flannel, jersey knits, home décor and even special occasion fabrics like satin, tulle, and silk.

Check out the extras

Go for trims like ribbon and lace. Buy the yard so you won’t run out any time soon. You’ll probably see threads and notions along with other sewing supplies. Check them out as well. You may need to replenish your supplies. Besides, you can never have too many supplies.

Read the washing instructions

Check the washing instructions. Otherwise, you could mess it up before you can even use it for your project. That would be a shame. Using cheap fabrics? Wash them. If you’re using precut fabrics, don’t wash them. If you’re working with vibrant reds and black, washing the fabric is a good precaution since some of these fabrics may bleed. Keep in mind what works for the materials you’ve picked for your project, and you should be good to go.
